Wolves don’t need to qualify for Champions League to keep top stars – Nuno

Wolves boss Nuno Santo has recently been discussing how Wolves do not need to secure Champions League football to keep hold of their best players.

Wolves in Champions League battle

Wolves were most certainly the surprise package of the 2018/19 Premier League season.

Despite only regaining their PL status the campaign prior, Nuno Santo’s outfit took the English top-flight by storm – clinching a 7th-place finish to earn them Europa League football for the current term.

And so far, despite the added pressure that comes with playing in Europe, the Midlands-based outfit have once again had a sensational 2019/20.

Wolves were sniffing around the European places back in March. And back-to-back victories since the restart meant they began Saturday only behind 5th-place Manchester United due to goal difference.

After their victory over Aston Villa earlier today, Wolves are now, of course, above United, but the Reds Devils do have a game in hand.

Wolves don’t need CL to keep big names

As things stand, finishing 5th in the current season would see said side earn Champions League football for 2020/21 due to Manchester City’s European ban.

Such an achievement for Wolves would, presumably, stand them in better stead for keeping hold of some of their big-name stars.

The likes of Raul Jimenez, Adama Traore and Ruben Neves have all once again been in top form this season, with Sky Sports News claiming said trio have all be linked with moves away from Molineux.

However, Nuno Santo is seemingly the opinion that Wolves do not need to clinch a CL spot to retain the services of their top assets:

“I don’t think that’s the reason they are here. The reason is they enjoy working together so we don’t have to achieve anything to retain them. At no point am I thinking about it.

“We don’t think about that (the top four). There’s no race for anything, the race is to compete, improve and make good games. This is the challenge for every team in this moment.

“I’m very proud of the work we have been doing. We have begun to build something, we did the right things and we are still in a building process. We have achieved important and remarkable things but still have a long way to go, there is still a lot of room to improve.

“When we started we didn’t know what was in front of us but we know we had a fantastic club to take care of and try to become as huge as it was in its past history.”

Traore-Jimenez link-up

The Traore-Jimenez partnership is one those in a position of power at Wolves will no doubt be keen to maintain for the foreseeable future, especially given how well the pair have performed since the restart.
