Real Sociedad 1 – Real Madrid 2
Real Madrid stayed in touch with Barcelona at the top of La Liga last weekend when Los Blancos beat Real Sociedad 2-1.
After a goalless first half, Sergio Ramos broke the deadlock from the penalty spot in the 50th minute.
Karim Benzema doubled Real’s lead 20 minutes later, while Real Sociedad pulled a goal back from Mikel Merino in the final stages.

Should Karim Benzema’s goal have been scrapped for handball?
VAR played a big part in the Sociedad vs Madrid game.
The technology awarded Real their penalty after Vinicius Junior was fouled in the box. Later, VAR chalked off a brilliant Adnan Januzaj goal for offside.
While VAR failed to act when Benzema scored after the French striker appeared to control the ball with his arm.
Had a few questions about the Karim Benzema goal last night. Safe to say under the current laws this goal should not have been allowed.
We have seen very similar instances in England and Germany with goals disallowed for handball. pic.twitter.com/IQEjiFFyA9

Asier Illarramendi hit with a 2-game suspension after Real Madrid despite not playing in the game
Today, the Spanish FA have released their updated sanctions list following the recent matches in La Liga.
That list has confirmed that Celta’s Okay Yokuslu and Real Madrid’s Casemiro are now suspended for one match for collecting too many yellow cards.
However, it’s also revealed that Real Sociedad midfielder Asier Illarramendi has been hit with a 2-game suspension after the Real Madrid match.
What’s made the Illarramendi suspension remarkable is the fact that the player wasn’t involved in the Real Madrid match at all.
Currently sidelined through injury, Illarramendi wasn’t named in the Sociedad matchday squad.
According to the official statement from the Spanish FA, Illarramendi’s ban is the result of showing “contempt” to the referee.

So what happened?
According to the EFE Agency, Illarramendi has been banned for abusing the officials in the tunnel after the game.
Illarramendi stands accused of shouting “you’re a disaster” at the referee.
Sadly, there doesn’t appear to be any video footage of that confrontation.
For Sociedad, the Illarramendi ban will prove to be irrelevant as the midfielder is set to be out of action for a while longer due to his ongoing adductor issues.
Barcelona move three points clear of Real Madrid
It may not have been pretty, but Barcelona opened up a 3-point gap on Real Madrid on Tuesday following a 1-0 home win against Athletic Bilbao.
Ivan Ratikic scored his first goal of the La Liga season in the second half to wrap up the points.
