Frank Lampard says Raheem Sterling was wrong over his Chelsea & Rangers managerial appointments comment

What Raheem Sterling said on BBC Newsnight

A couple of weeks ago, as Black Lives Matter protests began gathering momentum in the wake of the George Floyd killing, Man City’s Raheem Sterling sat down for a 20-minute long interview with Newsnight on the BBC.

In recent times, and following an appalling incident of racial abuse in an away match at Chelsea, Raheem Sterling has been a highly vocal critic of the racism which still permeates in English society and within football.

While Sterling has focused attention on how racism is institutionalised in England, the Man City star is also looking for actionable change.

As far as football is concerned, Sterling flagged up the huge lack of black managers in England football. He said:

We have no representation of us in the hierarchy, no representation of us in the coaching staffs.

Sterling also singled out Frank Lampard’s appointment at Chelsea and Steven Gerrard’s appointment at Rangers.

The Man City star wondered why Lampard and Gerrard have received these high-profile opportunities, while a black manager like Sol Campbell has been employed at Macclesfield and now at Southend. He said:

There’s Steven Gerrard, your Frank Lampards, you have your Sol Campbells and you have your Ashley Coles. All had great careers, all played for England.

At the same time, they’ve all respectfully done their coaching badges to coach at the highest level and the two that haven’t been given the right opportunities are the two black former players.

Frank Lampard: Raheem Sterling wrong over his Chelsea & Rangers managerial appointments comment

Man City’s Raheem Sterling is set to return to Chelsea on Thursday night in the Premier League.

Ahead of the game, Frank Lampard was asked about Sterling’s comments on his appointment at Stamford Bridge.

While Lampard was keen to praise Sterling for all his positive work in the field of fighting racism, the Chelsea manager also rejected suggestions that he’s been luck to get his chance with the Blues. Lampard said:

In the actual case of managers which Raheem said, I think he got it . . . from my point of view slightly wrong because it felt a very casual comparison…

Because if you compare opportunities and pathways of individual managers you can compare myself, Steven, Sol — who by the way did an incredible job at Macclesfield and the job now at Southend is tough — all of us would find it very difficult to do [relegation to League Two].

Compare Ashley Cole who finished his career with me at Derby last year and is working his way through here and I think he will be successful whatever he wants to do. So I think it’s very hard to make that comparison from the outside.
