How will Leagues One & Two finish their 2019-20 season?

While the Premier League continues to debate the possibility of completing the 2019-20 season, today may well be D-Day in the lower leagues.

The EFL Board is meeting today (Wednesday) to discuss whether it’s feasible to conclude the season.

When it comes to Leagues One and Two, the sense is that the season won’t be allowed to continue.

Rather than ending the season for purely medical and safety reasons during a global pandemic, the writing is on the wall for all League One and Two clubs because of the financial burdens they’re under.

The BBC explain why the restart of these leagues is generally seen as “impossible”, reporting:

It is estimated Premier League clubs have agreed to spend a combined £4m on Covid-19 testing alone for their players in order to get the season restarted.

In normal circumstances, finding a sum like that would be a tall order for the lower leagues. In the present climate, it is impossible.

Wycombe (8th) could leapfrog Sunderland & Portsmouth to win promotion to the Championship

Working on the assumption that Leagues One and Two call time on their 2019-20 season, the EFL will then have to decide on how to draw a line on the season.

It’s unclear how that will transpire, although several options are open for consideration. They include:

– Declaring the season null and void

– Ending the season ‘as is’

– Points-per-game calculation (PPG)

– Weighed points-per-game (WPPG)

If the WPPG option is favoured, which takes into account the number of home and away games each club has played, Wycombe Wanderers could move from 8th in League One to winning promotion into the Championship.

When the season was suspended, Wycombe had only played 34 matches.

By contrast, Portsmouth, in 4th, had played 35 games, while Sunderland, in 6th, had played 36 games.

Mike Minay, who works for BBC RM Sport, has crunched the numbers, to work out that WPPG would lift Wycombe into third-place in the table.

Working on the assumption that the League One playoffs will also be scrapped, Wycombe would then be promoted to the Championship.

Peterborough ready to go to court

Were Wycombe to win promotion via the WPPG method, Peterborough are ready to go to court.

Peterborough were 6th in League One when football stopped following a run of seven wins in nine games.

As noted on the BBC, “Peterborough owner Darragh MacAnthony has threatened a ‘legal battle of epic proportions’ if a decision was taken to the detriment of his club.”
