Kevin De Bruyne contract talks with Man City
Last weekend, Kevin De Bruyne indicated that he’d have to reassess his future if Man City’s two-year Champions League ban was upheld.
Man City are facing a two-year European football ban as UEFA found the club guilty of breaching Financial Fair Play rules. De Bruyne said:
Two years [without Champions League football] would be long. One year is something I might be able to cope with.
On Monday, the Times reported that “sources close to the player insisted yesterday that he has no intention of quitting.”
On Tuesday, the Times have doubled down on that sentiment, reporting that the Belgian midfielder is in line for a new deal with the Sky Blues:
Manchester City are set to open contract talks with Kevin De Bruyne at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old Belgium playmaker has three years left on his deal but City are believed to be ready to discuss a contract extension with him in light of his excellent performances this season.
De Bruyne currently earns £280,000 per week at City. If he agrees a new deal, he’s likely to receive a pay rise.
Player says something. One day later he’s been linked with Real and Barcelona.
He’s still happy at City. Has 3 years left and is not actively looking for a move. Man City consider him as their future captain and are expected to make a move for a new contract soon. #mcfc pic.twitter.com/wY5rHWVZm5

Man City’s next captain: De Bruyne likely to beat Fernandinho
David Silva, Man City’s current captain, is set to leave the club at the end of the season.
The Times believe that De Bruyne is the likeliest candidate to be the next City captain:
City see De Bruyne as a key player and he is the favourite to take over the captain’s armband from David Silva once the Spain midfielder departs at the end of the campaign.
De Bruyne is likely to get the nod, with Fernandinho his only real competition.
It is telling that De Bruyne has been City’s representative at captains’ meetings during the pandemic.
