Aston Villa’s Pepe Reina sparks political controversy supporting Spain’s far-right Vox party during Covid-19 lockdown

Spain & Covid-19

Spain has been one of the worst-hit countries in the world during the Covid-19 pandemic.

They’ve recorded 235,290 positive cases, which is the 5th highest in the world.

28,678 Spaniards have died from the virus, which is the 4th highest in the world.

Spain’s far-right Vox party protest during Covid-19 lockdown

While Spain have begun to flatten the curve to slow down the spread of the coronavirus, cities like Madrid and Barcelona remain under strict lockdown measures.

On Monday, Spain will begin to ease restrictions, however the pace of these relaxation measures isn’t quick enough for far-right Spanish party Vox.

As reported on the BBC, Vox organised protests over the weekend to urge the Spanish government to open up quicker:

Thousands of people in Spain are protesting against the government’s handling of the coronavirus outbreak.

The far-right Vox party urged supporters to drive through major cities without leaving their vehicles in order to maintain social distancing.

Vox are looking for all removal of all lockdown restrictions, report the BBC.

Aston Villa’s Pepe Reina sparks political controversy supporting Vox protesters

On Saturday, Aston Villa goalie Pepe Reina posted a tweet in support of the Vox protesters.

Reina wrote: “Ah! Well, it seems that little people have gone out to the street, right?”

The Aston Villa keeper added the hashtag ‘democracy’.

For what it’s worth, there’s been a huge backlash to Reina on Spanish Twitter.

Reina has been accused of being a fascist in his support of the political party Vox.

Note: Pepe Reina thinks he had Covid-19 already

While Pepe Reina appears to advocate for Spanish society to return to ‘normal’ and end all social distancing measures, it’s worth remembering that the Aston Villa goalie thinks he had Covid-19 already.

Back at the end of March, Reina told Spanish outlet Cadena Cope that he had coronavirus symptoms.

Reina said “they were difficult days… it was hard. It felt like a truck had run me over.”
