Dean Henderson reveals hopes of emulating David de Gea: ‘Hopefully I have a career at Man Utd like he has’

On-loan Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson has moved to reiterate his desire to carve out a career for himself at Old Trafford.

Henderson impressing

Highly-regarded shot-stopper Henderson is a product of the Red Devils’ youth academy, but has spent the last 2 years plying his trade with Sheffield United.

And, after playing a key role in the Blades’ return to the Premier League in 2018/19, the 23-year-old’s stock has continued to rise to this point in the current campaign.

As Chris Wilder’s men defy the odds in battling it out for a European berth, Henderson, despite a recent dip in Sheffield United’s performances, has conceded just 26 goals across 30 appearances.

His importance to Chris Wilder’s men, meanwhile, is highlighted further by the fact that the Blades have conceded 6 goals over the course of the 2 Premier League fixtures that he has missed this season.

‘Want to play for them’

The end of the campaign, though, will see Henderson’s future thrown up in the air, after his loan deal at Bramall Lane expires.

With David de Gea having long stood as the undisputed no.1 at Old Trafford, and Argentinian international Sergio Romero a reliable backup, Manchester United have a goalkeeping dilemma on their hands.

Recent reports, meanwhile, have hinted that the Sheffield United loanee himself will only sanction his return to Manchester in the case that he is guaranteed the no. 1 spot by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

And, if the latest comments on Henderson’s part are anything to go by, then his intentions appear crystal clear.

Speaking in an interview with TV3 earlier today, the 23-year-old was drawn on his plans for the future, as well as the goalkeeping situation at Old Trafford.

First, Henderson was keen to reiterate that his end goal remains carving out a career for himself at Manchester United:

‘I think it’s clear for everyone to know. I want to play for Manchester United and England.’

The Englishman, though, was also quick to heap praise on the man whom he could soon be forced to battle it out with for a starting berth.

Henderson went on to reveal his opinion that David de Gea has ‘probably been the best player’ at United during his spell with the club, before suggesting that, despite his struggles of late, the Spaniard deserves the opportunity to once again prove his worth:

‘The fans have to remember what he’s [De Gea] done for the last nine years – he’s been phenomenal.’

‘He’s probably been the best player at United for that time period. He should get another opportunity.’

‘I’m a young lad. I’m working hard. I’m a fan of the club and I want to play for them. Hopefully I have a career at Man Utd like David de Gea has.’
