Why Vicente Guaita missed Liverpool
Prior to Wednesday’s 4-0 drumming at Liverpool, Crystal Palace were on a 4-game winning roll.
Impressively, Palace had won all those matches without conceding a goal.
Spanish keeper Vicente Guaita has been outstanding for Palace this season, however, despite travelling to Anfield on Wednesday, the keeper wasn’t even named on the bench.
Before kick-off at Anfield, Roy Hodgson confirmed that Guaita, like Christian Benteke, was out with a muscle strain. Wayne Hennessey was called upon instead.

Will Guaita now be out of action for a while? After the Liverpool match, Hodgson gave more details on the health of his #1 keeper:
He’s got a thigh strain. The problem with that is kicking. I wouldn’t have been so concerned about his ability to move around in the goal area, but the problem would be kicking.
He didn’t take a chance. We were frightened that if we took a chance – if he kicked a couple of balls – his thigh strain could become a definitely 10. We can’t afford (that).
It’s unclear whether Vicente Guaita will return for Palace’s next match against Burnley on Monday night.
The likelihood of Wilfried Zaha & Christian Benteke playing against Burnley
As previously mentioned, Christian Benteke also missed the trip to Anfield. The Belgian forward, who has scored two Premier League goals, was forced out of the game with a muscle problem.
While Palace’s evening in Liverpool worsened when Wilfried Zaha was forced out of the game after 13 minutes.
After the match, Hodgson revealed that Zaha actually picked up a calf problem in the warm-up. While the Eagles manager if also unsure if Zaha will be fit for the Burnley game:
It’s a calf muscle strain. There were some discussions as to whether he should attempt to play but he was adamant it was something he could try to get away with. It became obvious he couldn’t and we don’t want him to be out for a long period.
We got him off as quickly as we could then because we don’t really want to be without him for long periods of time.
It’s like all these strains – with Benteke’s on Saturday we didn’t think that was going to be particularly worrisome at all, and the same with Guaita.
