Why Timo Werner’s Chelsea move is bad news for Christian Pulisic & Man City plan to battle Blues for Ben Chilwell

Why Timo Werner’s Chelsea move is bad news for Christian Pulisic

On Sunday we reported that Timo Werner could complete his move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea in the next 7-days.

After months of speculation that Werner was on his way to Liverpool, everything changed at the back-end of last week.

Liverpool backed out of the deal – Jurgen Klopp has since cited financial constraints as the reason for this – and Chelsea moved opportunistically to snap up the 24-year-old German forward.

On Monday, the Athletic have considered how Werner’s arrival at Chelsea may affect Tammy Abraham’s role in the side.

Abraham, 22, has scored 13 goals in 25 Premier League appearances this season.

Some have speculated that Werner’s arrival could spell the end of Abraham’s run in the team.

However, Athletic reporters Liam Twomey and Simon Johnson have rejected that suggestion, arguing that Werner is set to play alongside Abraham:

Lampard still considers Abraham central to the Chelsea team he is building. He wants his No 9 to be the focal point for the attack…

There is a reason why the forwards Chelsea have looked closest at over the past six months — Dries Mertens, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Werner — all happen to be converted wingers. They fit the profile of proven goalscorers who can just as easily play with Abraham as instead of him, as second strikers or left wingers encouraged to attack the penalty area at every opportunity.

Rather than being bad news for Abraham, the Athletic suggest that Werner’s arrival is actually more problematic for American international Christian Pulisic.

Pulisic agreed to join Chelsea in January 2019 for £58 million. In his first season at Chelsea, Pulisic has scored 5 Premier League goals in 16 appearances.

According to the Atheltic, Pulisic “faces the bigger fight to keep his starting spot”.

How much will Timo Werner cost Chelsea?

Chelsea are understood to have triggered Werner’s €60m (£53.8m) release clause to sign him from RB Leipzig.

However, when it comes to surveying the full cost of the Werner deal, the Times have suggested the striker will cost Chelsea around £100 million:

Frank Lampard’s side are expected to trigger the release clause in the Germany international’s contract, having agreed terms of around £200,000-a-week with the player which takes the overall outlay to £100million on a five-year deal.

The Athletic believe Werner’s wages may be a little lower, reporting:

Werner’s deal, which sources have told The Athletic is likely to rise to around £170,000-a-week plus bonuses, could well establish a new benchmark for Abraham’s camp.

Man City plan to battle Blues for Ben Chilwell

Are Chelsea going to sign Ben Chilwell from Leicester City this summer?

Those rumours have been gathering speed in recent days, having been peddled by the Athletic and the Times.

However, the Telegraph have thrown a spanner into the mix on Monday, reporting that Man City are ready to rival the Blues for Chilwell:

Manchester City are prepared to join the race for Ben Chilwell when the transfer window opens at the end of the season.

Chilwell will come into Guardiola’s thinking when he needs a left-back. However, Leicester’s valuation may prove an obstacle: they rate their full-back as highly as they did Harry Maguire, who went for a world-record £85million for a defender when he joined Manchester United.

Of course, Man City already have several left-back options in their squad.

Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko can both play in that position, while Aymeric Laporte has filled in their too.
