Timo Werner’s agent paid £12 million from Chelsea deal & why Werner won’t play for RB Leipzig in the Champions League

Karlheinz Förster paid £12 million after Chelsea signed Timo Werner

In the latest edition of the Price of Football podcast, football finance expert Kieran Maguire has dug into the numbers behind Timo Werner’s move from RB Leipzig to Chelsea.

Last week, Chelsea confirmed the signing of 24-year-old Werner.

Werner is scheduled to arrive at Chelsea after the Bundesliga season wraps up in July, but before the Champions League season restarts in August.

In an eye-popping report from Kieran Maguire during the financial crisis caused by Covid-19, it’s been confirmed that Timo Werner’s agent, Karlheinz Förster, netted £12 million from the Chelsea deal.

It’s further been reported that “the release clause on the contract is £52 million.”

Also, Werner’s wages will shoot up to £9 million a year.

Should Werner complete his five-year contract at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea will end up paying a total bill of £109 million – and that’s before bonuses.

Why Timo Werner won’t play for RB Leipzig in the Champions League

One of the controversial aspects of the Werner deal has been the announcement that the German international won’t play for RB Leipzig in the quarterfinals of this season’s Champions League.

Leipzig booked their spot in the last 8 after beating Tottenham in the last round.

Over the weekend, Karlheinz Förster appeared on Germany’s Sport 1 to provide the background to Werner’s decision.

Like any good agent, Karlheinz Förster defended his client against criticisms of that choice, saying:

What annoys me is that Timo is now being put in a corner and portrayed as a bad sportsman who lets his team-mates down. I have to contradict that very clearly.

It would have been anything but a good start for Timo at his new club if he had to return to Leipzig for the preparation and the Champions League after the break.

It was the joint vote of all parties involved – and not just Timo’s decision – that he should move to Chelsea on July 1, and not until mid or late August.
