Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand in line to replace Chelsea target Ben Chilwell at Leicester

Chelsea & Leicester’s Ben Chilwell

It’s becoming increasingly likely that Ben Chilwell will leave Leicester to join Chelsea this summer, report the Times on Thursday.

According to reporter Gary Jacob, “Leicester City are increasingly resigned to Ben Chilwell leaving for Chelsea”.

Should Chilwell sign for the Blues, he’s set to overtake the likes of Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri to become the club’s first-choice left-bak.

Indeed, Alonso and Emerson could both leave Stamford Bridge this summer as a result.

How much will Chilwell cost Chelsea?

Chilwell won’t come cheap.

The defender is under contract at the King Power Stadium until 2024, while Leicester aren’t a selling club.

That said, Leicester have a habit of allowing one player to leave every summer, on the proviso that the Foxes’s transfer demands are met. The Times report:

Leicester have told Chelsea that they want a fee in the region of the £75million they received for selling Harry Maguire to Manchester United last summer.

They have also pointed to Chelsea potentially committing around £86million on Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner, both attacking players, as evidence that money does not seem to be an issue.

Leicester target Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand

Reporter Gary Jacob has added that Southampton’s Ryan Bertrand is a possible target for Leicester in the event Chilwell moves to west London:

Brendan Rodgers, the Leicester manager, has shown interest in Ryan Bertrand, who has one year left on his contract at Southampton.

Bertrand, who will turn 31 in August, was coached by Rodgers at Chelsea’s academy and played under him on loan at Reading.

Bertrand has made 24 Premier League appearances this season for Southampton.

He’s scored one league goal and chipped in with one league assist.

Bertrand: Southampton contract talks

The Daily Mail are reporting that Southampton are keen to keep Bertrand at St Mary’s. The Saints are hoping to convince the defender to stay on the south coast, as readers are told:

Southampton are planning contract talks with Ryan Bertrand amid mounting interest in the defender from Leicester.

Manager Ralph Hasenhuttl last week outlined his reluctance to let players go without a fee or run their contracts into a final year.

However, Southampton fans might wonder why the club have waited so long to start these talks?

Other left-backs links to Chelsea

While Bertrand is the latest left-back linked to Chelsea, others have been mentioned as alternative transfer targets.

According to the Transfer Window Podcast, Arsenal and Scotland’s Kieran Tierney is another full-back on Leicester’s radar.

Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico is another left-back whose is apparently being considered by the Foxes.

Leicester & Southampton: Jannik Vestergaard

Could Leicester end up signing two defenders from Southampton this summer?

Aside from the interest in Bertrand, yesterday we reported that Jannik Vestergaard is another defender who Leicester are looking at.

Both the Times and Danish paper Ekstra Bladet have reported that Vestergaard could join the Foxes in the off-season.
