A group of high-profile ethnic minority footballers in the Bundesliga displayed political tributes in solitary with murdered American George Floyd this weekend.

English teenager Jadon Sancho scored his first Bundesliga hat-trick for Borussia Dortmund on Sunday in a 6-1 win against Paderborn.

After scoring, Sancho removed his BVB jersey to reveal an undershirt with “Justice for George Floyd” written on it.

Sancho later took to social media to discuss his three goals, writing:

A bittersweet moment personally as there are more important things going on in the world today that we must address and help make a change.

Borussia Dortmund’s Moroccan international Achraf Hakimi, on his 50th appearance for the club, also joined Jadon Sancho in dedicating his goal to George Floyd.

On Saturday, 21-year-old American midfielder Weston McKennie wore an armband reading “Justice for George” in Schalke’s match against Werder Bremen.

After the game, McKennie wrote on social media:

We have to stand up for what we believe in and I believe that it is time that we are heard!

Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram took a knee

Borussia Monchengladbach striker Marcus Thuram also paid tribute to George Floyd on Sunday.

After scoring in a 4-1 Gladbach win against Union Berlin, 22-year-old Thuram took a knee.

German FA may issue punishments for the political tributes

Sancho, Hakimi and McKennie now face possible punishments from the German FA for their political tributes.

Goal.com have confirmed that the German FA are looking into the incidents, while the DFB’s Anton Nachreiner has said:

Over the next few days, we will look into these events and examine the facts accordingly.

Meanwhile, the Times have looked into what sanctions could be applied in these cases.

Players have been banned from showing personal messages of any kind since 2014. Sancho was booked but could be punished further.
