Rumour: Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich bought the ‘Scream’ for $120m

Where did the weird lie come from?
The source of the rumour has been traced back to a group called ‘Sotheby’s Life’ on Telegram.
On June 6, Sotheby’s Life’ posted the following claim on their social media page:
Roman Abramovich has again proven himself to be an art connoisseur. He bought the famous painting the “Scream” by Munch (one of its four options) for $120 million.

The Roman Abramovich, Scream story is totally fake
While news of the apparent purchase continues to fly around the internet, the rumour has already been labelled total BS.
TASS, the Russian news outlet, have quoted a source close to the Chelsea owner who has wholly denied the story: “The information is not true”.

Also in the report, TASS noted that there are three ‘Scream’ paintings in the world.
Three of them are in art galleries in Norway, while the other painting is owned by American Leon Black, who paid $120m for the painting at an auction in New York in 2012.
It’s also worth noting that sport lawyer Jake Cohen has also refuted the Abramovich-Scream story, as has the Athletic’s Liam Twomey.
We’ve seen a lot of weird lies and fake news about Mr Abramovich over the years, but this one is up there as the weirdest. 🤨😱 https://t.co/SUPys83BIf

I’m reliably informed that reports in Russia yesterday claiming Abramovich bought this painting for $120m are wrong. It’s not true #CFC pic.twitter.com/bzIb7azig0
