Everton offer Thiago Silva a 2-year deal but Tottenham are also in the transfer race

Everton offer Thiago Silva a 2-year deal

Apparently Everton have made their move.

As revealed in the latest episode of the Transfer Window podcast (listen below), Everton have officially tabled an offer to Thiago Silva, who will become a free agent at the end of this month.

Thiago Silva is approaching the end an 8-year at PSG, however the Parisians have confirmed that they will not offer the Brazilian centre-half a new deal.

Reporter Ian McGarry has now announced:

We have information that Everton are ahead in the race to sign the Brazilian international.

(Thiago Silva) has been offered a 2-year deal which consists of one-year plus a one-year extension, which would be triggered by a 25 appearance clause in the first season of his contract.

We understand also that (Everton) are willing to offer 4 million euros net in terms of his salary.

How can Everton afford Thiago Silva?

Some Everton fans may baulk at suggestions that Thiago Silva could sign=on at Goodison Park.

Should the Toffees really be shelling out so much money on a 35-year-old with little sell-on value?

In the past few days, Everton confirmed that their employees have taken huge wage cuts during the Covid-19 crisis.

It’s been confirmed that Everton’s squad have agreed to voluntary wage deferrals of up to 50 per cent for the next three months.

Carlo Ancelotti, and the club’s other employees, have also taken pay cuts.

How can Everton match-up these pay-cuts with the financial outlay required to secure Thiago Silva?

Could Tottenham challenge Everton for Thiago Silva?

Returning to the Transfer Window podcast, reporter Duncan Castles added that Tottenham are also in the market for Thiago Silva.

Unlike Everton, it doesn’t appear that Spurs have made an actual offer for the South American defender. Yet, listeners are told:

There are other clubs interested (in Thiago Silva).

I know that he is under consideration by Jose Mourinho at Tottenham – that doesn’t come as a surprise.

Mourinho wants a centre-back, an experience centre-back.

Like Everton supporters, Spurs fans may also raise an eyebrow at this Thiago Silva update.

Can Tottenham really afford this move, even if the defender is a free agent?

Spurs have major financial problems following the Covid-19 pandemic and, after the club secured a 175 million pound loan from the Bank of England, many will question the sense of investing so much money in a player who’ll be 36 in September.

On the flip-side, Jan Vertonghen seems certain to leave Spurs this summer, while Eric Dier could also be sold.

That means there’s pressure on Mourinho to bolster Tottenham’s defensive options before the start of next season.
