David Luiz helps Brighton & Southampton & Luiz claims Mikel Arteta still wants him to sign a new contract

Man City 3 – Arsenal 0

Raheem Sterling scored the first goal in the Premier League since a 3-month break on Wednesday night against Arsenal.

Minutes before the break at the Etihad Stadium, an error from David Luiz gifted the ball to Sterling in the box, and the forward smashed a shot past Bernd Leno.

Luiz’s night got much worse after the restart, as he was sent off for hauling down Riyad Mahrez in the box.

Not only was Luiz sent off, but Kevin De Bruyne scored from the spot.

Phil Foden grabbed a late third to round off the win.

David Luiz helps Brighton & Southampton

After receiving his straight red card against the Sky Blues, David Luiz is now banned for Arsenal’s next two matches: Brighton and Southampton, who are both still in the relegation dogfight.

Brighton host the Gunners on Saturday, while Southampton welcome Arsenal to St Mary’s next Thursday.

However, it’s worth noting that Arsenal’s defensive woes are likely to be even more problematic for these matches.

In the first half against Man City, Pablo Mari, who started the match alongside Shkodran Mustafi, pulled up with an injury.

Mari seemed to sustain a hamstring injury after Kyle Walker whizzed past him. That could sideline the centre-half for several weeks.

In addition, Sokratis Papastathopoulos was unavailable for the City match due to a knock.

With Luiz and Mari almost certainly out of contention, and with Sokratis also a doubt for the upcoming games, Rob Holding could receive his first appearance of the season at Arsenal in the games against Brighton and the Saints.

Luiz claims Mikel Arteta still wants him to sign a new contract

At the current time of writing, David Luiz may have played his last match for Arsenal.

Luiz is out of contract at the end of the month and he’s yet to agree a new deal.

Following his two-game ban, unless Luiz pens an extension, the Man City game will be his last as a Gooner.

However, Luiz seems convinced that he will sign a deal until the end of the season. Speaking after the City game, he said:

I love to be here that is why I continue to train hard and that is why I came today. Nobody asked me to speak, it is up to me to show my face.

I want to stay. The coach knows and wants me to stay, we are waiting for the decisions.
