Premier League confirm 6 positive Covid-19 cases
On Tuesday, the Premier League released the results from the first round of Covid-19 testing in the division.
748 people were tested, including players and staff at the Premier League clubs.
6 people turned up positive results.
Watford: 2 staff infected & 1 player
On Tuesday night, Watford confirmed that three members of their group had tested positive for Covid-19.
The Hornets posted the following update on their website:
Of those three positive tests, one is a player and two are members of staff. All three have asked that medical confidentiality be respected and, therefore, the club will not be naming those involved.
All three will now self-isolate for seven days – in line with the protocols set out in Premier League guidelines – before being tested again at a later date.
We do not know which footballer is now in quarantine.

Troy Deeney has refused to return to training
News of Watford’s positive tests comes after their captain, Troy Deeney, has been incredibly vocal in recent days in voicing his opposition to the Premier League’s Project Restart plans.
Deeney has refused to return to training as a result.

Burnley coach Ian Woan tests positive
Burnley have confirmed that their coach Ian Woan, 52, has also tested positive for Covid-19.
Addressing the issue on their website, Burnley told their fans:
Burnley Football Club can confirm that after completing a COVID-19 test on Sunday 17th May, assistant manager Ian Woan has tested positive.
Ian is asymptomatic and is currently safe and well at home.
He will remain in close communication with club personnel regarding his re-engagement in training once he is clear of the virus.

No results from Norwich
Tuesday’s results covered 19 of the 20 Premier League clubs.
The only Premier League side yet to reveal the results of their first testing are Norwich City.
According to the Athletic, Norwich only conducted their first round of testing on Tuesday.
It’s believed that Norwich’s test results will only be revealed this weekend, together with all the results from the second round of testing of the other Premier League sides.
The other 2 positive Premier League tests
The only really information we have about the remaining two positive Covid-19 cases has been provided by the BBC:
The other two are at a third club, the details of which have not been revealed.
To be clear, we don’t know whether these two positive results have been found in players or in the coaching staff.
Football fans shouldn’t be too surprised that limited information is known about these cases. The people who are affected have a right to have their medical information kept confidential.
The Premier League acknowledged this fact in their statement on the 6 positive Covid-19 results:
No specific details as to clubs or individuals will be provided by the Premier League due to legal and operational requirements.
What do these 6 positive cases mean for the Premier League’s chances of restarting?
The consensus opinion is that the 6 positive Covid-19 results are good news for the Premier League.
Indeed, the Guardian report that the Premier League has been “buoyed” by the results which “provided welcome news for the league”. The Guardian added:
The low rate of positive results will add heft to the league’s attempts to persuade players that theirs is a safe environment in which to return to work.
What’s safe to say is that Tuesday’s results (a) could have been a lot worse and (b) don’t appear to have impacted the possible restart date for the Premier League.
June 12 has been widely discussed as a possible restart date for the 2019-20 season.
However, the Athletic recently warned their readers that the start date is probably going to be pushed back:
Many clubs now believe the weekend of June 19 or even June 26 may be a more likely return.
