UEFA provide Celtic & Rangers clarity over Champions League & Europa League qualifiers

Celtic to be crowned champions, Rangers runners-up

It’s yet to be confirmed, however the SPFL appear ready to call time on the 2019-20 season.

On Friday, during a meeting with all the Scottish top flight clubs plus Dundee United, who topped the Championship, a decision was reached over how to handle the remainder of the Scottish season.

As reported by Scottish football journalist Roddy Forsyth:

Celtic are set to be crowned Scottish champions for the ninth successive season on Monday…

The consensus (is) that the current campaign should be truncated and placings accepted as they stand under the application of the points average method.

When the Scottish season was suspended, Celtic held a 13-point lead over second-placed Rangers.

Rangers, meanwhile, are 21 points clear of Motherwell in third. Aberdeen were fourth in the standings.

At the other end of the table, Hearts are now facing relegation.

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin & beIN SPORT

Celtic are now set to play in the 2020-21 Champions League. While Rangers, Motherwell and Aberdeen are due to qualify for the Europa League.

There are still plenty of questions to be answered about next season’s European competitions including the big one: can they even go ahead?

And, to muddy the waters further, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin indicated to beIN SPORT last week, that a consequence of any league failing to complete the 2019-20 season would be that their clubs would need to qualify for next season’s tournaments. Ceferin said:

I think that most leagues will be able to finish the championship.

Those who do not choose to do so will have to face the preliminary rounds if they want to take part in the next UEFA competitions.

However, as confirmed by the Glasgow Times, UEFA have now clarified Ceferin’s comments to assure Celtic and Rangers that any decision to end the Scottish season would have no impact on 2020-21 European qualification:

With regard to the way some quotes in an interview with beIN have been reported, UEFA wishes to make clear that President Ceferin said that clubs from leagues which were abandoned in this season would still need to be ready to play qualification rounds for next season according to the current access list.

He did not mention or hint at any change to the UEFA club competitions access list.
