Tottenham lose millions of pounds after NFL cancel games

NFL cancel UK matches at Wembley & Tottenham

On Monday night, the NFL caved in.

As NFL fans continue to wait to see if the league resumes in 2020, one thing has been made clear: they’ll be no overseas matches in England this year.

In a statement released by the National Football League, fans were told:

After considerable analysis, we believe the decision to play all our games domestically this season is the right one for our players, our clubs, and all our fans in the US, Mexico and UK.

We greatly appreciate the support of our governmental and stadium partners in Mexico and the United Kingdom, who all agree with this decision, and we look forward to returning for games in both countries in the 2021 season.

The NFL was supposed to stage four matches in the UK.

The Jacksonville Jaguars were scheduled two play twice at Wembley, while Tottenham were set to host two matches at their new stadium featuring the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins.

Tottenham lose millions of pounds

News of the NFL’s cancellations will hurt Tottenham financially.

Spurs are expected to lose more than 4 million pounds as a result of the NFL’s decision, report the Daily Mail. Readers are further told:

The NFL’s impending announcement is also a setback for the FA, who were due to hold two games at Wembley and will also lose millions, but is a bigger blow for Tottenham given the amount they invested in a retractable pitch which has only been used once, and the costs of servicing the stadium’s £637m debt.

It’s worth noting that the NFL agreed a 10-year deal to host two matches a season at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Possible impact on Tottenham’s transfer policy

Yesterday we reported the updates from journalist Duncan Castles, who claimed that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy has indicated to manager Jose Mourinho that there’s no money at the club for transfer fees in the next transfer window.

Those claims have been echoed in the Evening Standard, as Tottenham fans are told:

Jose Mourinho is expecting to be limited to free agents and swap deals in the next transfer window, as the top-flight prepares for a drastically changed financial outlook brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.
