Premier League confirm two more positive Covid-19 cases & Tom Cleverley on convincing Watford’s Troy Deeney to play

Premier League confirm two more positive Covid-19 cases

The latest round of Covid-19 testing in the Premier League has revealed two more positive cases.

On Saturday night, the Premier League posted the following update on their website:

The Premier League can today confirm that on Tuesday 19 May, Thursday 21 May and Friday 22 May, 996 players and club staff were tested for COVID-19. Of these, two have tested positive from two clubs.

Players or club staff who have tested positive will now self-isolate for a period of seven days.

For the second round of testing, the number of tests available to each club was increased from 40 to 50.

To be clear, we don’t know which clubs have thrown up these latest two positive results.

We also don’t know if the infected persons are players, coaches, or other members of staff.

Watford & Burnley have previously produced positive cases

Previously, Watford and Burnley have confirmed positive Covid-19 cases in their squads.

In the first round of testing, two players and one coach at Watford turned up positive coronavirus results.

33-year-old Watford defender Adrian Mariappa confirmed he’d tested positive.

Also, Burnley revealed that coach Ian Woan was Covid-19 positive.

Elsewhere, after the first round of testing, a few clubs let it be known that they’d not had any positive results.

Man United, Norwich and Wolves previously confirmed that their squads were conronavirus free.

When will the 2019-20 Premier League resume?

There’s still no firm date set for the resumption of the 2019-20 Premier League.

However, as noted in the Sunday Times, the latest discovery of just two more positive Covid-19 cases is good news for Project Restart:

Premier League players could resume contact training by Thursday, the day after the 20 clubs vote on the issue as they seek to go on to the next stage of the football restart programme.

Should the clubs agree to go ahead with phase two, it would mean that the Premier League season would be on schedule to resume by about June 15.

Tom Cleverley on convincing Watford’s Troy Deeney to play

In recent days, as Premier League clubs started phase one in their training schedules, some footballers decided against joining up with their squads.

Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante showed up on day one, however the French World Cup winner has since agreed to stay away from training.

At Watford, captain Troy Deeney has been vocal with his objections to resuming training. Deeney’s young son has had breathing issues previously, and the Watford captain is understandably erring on the side of caution.

In the Observer, Watford midfielder Tom Cleverley has provided his thoughts on when Deeney could return to action:

What would I tell Troy? I would say that so far in training I have come into contact with as many people as I would visiting the supermarket or going for a morning jog round my estate.

I would talk him through the details, that’s all, though I appreciate we have not started contact training yet. That looks like it might be a pivotal moment.

Any increase in positive tests during phase two would probably put the whole thing in jeopardy.
