PFA chief Gordon Taylor claims Premier League matches may be less than 90 minutes

On Tuesday morning on the ‘Today’ show on BBC Radio 4, PFA chief Gordon Taylor made a startling claim about how football may operate when it resumes.

The Premier League are currently fine-tuning the plans around Project Restart in an effort to complete the 2019-20 season.

14 of the 20 Premier League clubs need to agree on the plans before they can move into the next phase.

 

Premier League matches may be less than 90 minutes

In a remarkable statement, Gordon Taylor suggested that Premier League matches may be shortened from 90 minutes. He said:

We don’t know the future, but we do know what propositions have been put, what ideas have been put, the possibility of having more substitutes, games possibly not being the full 45 minutes each way.

In another key comment, the PFA chief said that he didn’t expect the Premier League to resume before the middle of June.

Would this be the death-knell to sporting integrity?

The backlash to Gordon Taylor’s proposal has been instant on social media.

As may be expected, many believe that shortening football from 90 minutes would undermine the sporting integrity of the Premier League.
