Man United’s Juan Mata & David de Gea quit Spanish footballers’ union as the president faces bribery charges

Man United’s Juan Mata & David de Gea quit Spanish footballers’ union

Marca have broken the news that Manchester United’s Juan Mata & David de Gea have both quit the Spanish footballers’ union (AFE).

Mata and De Gea were both appointed as vice-presidents of the AFE back in 2017.

However, according to Marca, the Man United duo “silently resigned” from their posts a month ago. The Spanish paper claimed:

The two Manchester United players weren’t happy with the management of the organisation.

There has been no official confirmation of Mata and De Gea’s exits and the quiet way in which it was done means that some board members haven’t actually realised.

So why is this relevant? AFE president faces bribery charges

In the last few days, a storm has been brewing in Spanish football around AFE president David Aganzo.

David Aganzo has been accused of bribery in relation to an alleged 3,000 euro payment to a public official to get his hands on financial documentation relating to another Spanish football union called Futbolistas ON.

Putting two and two together to get five, some may assume that Mata and De Gea resigned over these current bribery claims.

However, Marca report that the Man United players’ resignations are “not related to the recent allegations against the president.”

What’s the evidence against David Aganzo?

Returning to the current bribery scandal, AFE president David Aganzo has been attacked by another Spanish official, Antonio Saiz Checa, who is a director of the Segunda B and Tercera divisions.

According to Checa, he was personally involved in the bribery case involving Futbolistas ON.

In an email sent to the members of the AFE board, Checa wrote:

(Aganzo) forced me to collaborate – to illegally obtain certain fiscal documentation on Futbolistas On.

Checa also wrote that he “participated and collaborated” in other actions, saying “I regret every moment”. He added:

I was subjected to both emotional and professional blackmail.

As for Aganzo, he denies all the accusations.
