Man United’s Daniel James opts for Juan Mata over Lionel Messi as footballing hero

James joins Man United

Danie James joined Manchester United this past summer for a fee of around £15m.

The winger had previously been plying his trade in the Championship with Swansea City.

And whilst James had impressed in England’s second division, he had zero top-flight experience to his name when United signed him.

Despite this, the Welshman was handed a fairly prominent role by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer from the start of the campaign.

In total, James has featured in 27 of the Red Devils’ 29 league ties this term, in which he has scored three and assisted six.

Can’t wait to be back

James’ footballing hero

James’ form did dip off in the second half of the campaign, but that is to be expected given his lack of experience at a top level.

Going from playing at Swansea to Man United may have been quite the shock for the 22-year-old as whilst United aren’t the best team in England anymore, they still have some top stars in their ranks.

One of which, according to James, was his footballing hero.

Whilst you would assume most up and coming stars would now opt for someone such as Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo as their footballing hero, James instead chose now teammate, Juan Mata.

When asked about his footballing heroes in a recent interview, James stated:

“Everyone looks up to Lionel Messi, but I think I’ve got to go for Juan Mata. He’s someone that I’ve always looked up to.

“I think when I first met him it was just a bit…weird for me.

“Growing up as a kid looking up to someone and then you’re playing with them and not just being great on the pitch, but off the pitch as well. He’s someone that inspires me a lot.”

James also detailed the first face-to-face interaction between himself and Mata:

“When I first met him, he came and sat next to me in the changing room and said, ‘I know it’s a big move for you, if you need anything here is my number and if you ever need to talk about anything I’m here.’ That was obviously great for me.”
