Man United shelve search for a director of football & ‘Marcus Rashford can be as good as Kylian Mbappe’

Man United’s director of football search ends

The Athletic have reported on Monday that, two years after it began, Manchester United have ended their search to appoint a director of football.

It’s now highly unlikely that such an appointment will be made at Old Trafford, claims reporter Laurie Whitwell.

Why? Because Man United’s hierarchy have decided that their current structure is fit for purpose. The Athletic reveal:

It is safe to say that such a precise role is not on the agenda (at Manchester United) anymore.

United do not seek a guru to lead policy for signings, nor will anybody come in to take ownership of who sits in the dugout.

Breaking down the recruitment pyramid at Old Trafford

At the very top are the American owners: the Glazers.

Below them is vice chairman Ed Woodward, who remain responsible for “hiring and firing”.

As to the specifics of recruitment, The Athletic not United have “Marcel Bout (head of global scouting), Mick Court (technical chief scout), and Jim Lawlor (chief scout).”

Yet, the net is even wider than that as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a “personal scout”, Simon Wells.

While Stephen Brown is Man United’s head of scouting operations – a position which also focus on data.

Matteo Darmian: ‘Marcus Rashford can be as good as Kylian Mbappe’

Now at Parma, Matteo Darmian has given an interview to Fabrizio Romano for the Guardian.

According to the Italian defender, Marcus Rashford has the potential to be the best player in world football. Darmian said:

If (Rashford) continues to work the way he has done so far he can be a Ballon d’Or winner. I’m convinced of this.

He impressed me the most of all the players at United and he’s very young and can still improve.

For me he can reach the level of Kylian Mbappé and compete for the Ballon d’Or for years to come.
