Man City’s Champions League ban appeal will be held in secret
Last week it was confirmed that Man City’s court dates in their appeal against a 2-year Champions League ban will be from June 8-10.
Man City are currently banned from playing in any UEFA competition for the next twenty-four months following “serious breaches” of the financial fair play rules.
The Sky Blues will now have their day in court – at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – in just over two weeks.
However, the Times have now confirmed that the court hearing will be held in secret as no media will be allowed to observe the proceedings. Reporter Paul Hirst has revealed:
Manchester City’s hearing over their two-year Champions League ban will not be held in public.
“Neither party has requested a public hearing. It will not be possible for media to view the proceedings,” CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb said.
What do we know about the process of Man City’s appeal?
The Times predict that Man City’s lawyers will make their arguments via VideoLink.
However, it is possible that Man City’s legal team turn up in court as well.
The Court of Arbitration for Sport is located in Lausanne, Switzerland.
It’s confirmed in the Times that “there is no quarantine requirement for travellers entering Switzerland who are free of symptoms of illness.”
Meanwhile, it’s unclear how UEFA will present their case: either by VideoLink or in-person.
What is now clear, however, is that “representatives from both Uefa and City will therefore be able to make their cases to the court in private”, report the Times.

When will Man City find out the result of their appeal?
That’s unknown. CAS secretary general Matthieu Reeb said yesterday:
Following the hearing, the panel will deliberate and will start drafting the arbitral award containing its decision.
It is not possible to predict at this time how long this process will take.
Court of Arbitration for Sport Secretary General Matthieu Reeb has stated that no request has been made for a public hearing in Manchester City’s appeal against a UEFA ban, meaning the public and the media will not be able to watch proceedings.

Possible impact on Man United
Manchester City are confident of winning their appeal at CAS. However, there are several possible outcomes in their case:
– Man City lose and the ban is upheld
– Man City win and the ban is uplifted entirely
– Man City win and the ban is reduced to one year
If City are fully successful in overturning the ban, Pep Guardiola’s side would be eligible to play Champions League football once again.
That would be a blow for Man United, who are currently poised to benefit from City’s punishment.
Man United are 5th in the Premier League, and they are presently on course to be the league’s 4th representative in the UCL.
But if City win their appal, Man United will play Europa League football next season.
