Man City’s Champions League ban appeal set for June, UEFA’s Aleksander Ceferin reacts & possible impact on Man United

Man City’s Champions League ban appeal set for June

As we reported yesterday, Man City have now been given a court date for their appeal against a 2-year Champions League ban.

Man City are currently banned from playing in any UEFA competition for the next twenty-four months following “serious breaches” of the financial fair play rules.

The Sky Blues will now have their day in court – the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) – in three weeks time.

Reporter Rob Harris has confirmed that Man City will stage their appeal on June 8-10.

What are the possible outcomes of the Man City appeal?

It’s way too early to tell if Man City will be successful in court.

However, the following scenarios could all come into play after the appeal concludes:

– Man City lose and the ban is upheld

– Man City win and the ban is uplifted entirely

– Man City win and the ban is reduced to one year

How will Man City’s appeal be heard?

It’s unclear whether Man City’s case will be held in person or via a video link.

As reported in the Telegraph, a CAS spokesperson said:

Only the dates are confirmed at this time.

The format will be decided nearer the time, depending on the evolution of the current situation.

UEFA’s Aleksander Ceferin reacts

The Guardian on Wednesday have a fresh interview with UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin.

During that Q&A, Ceferin was asked about the Man City appeal, which lead to the following back and forth.

Guardian: Before the Covid-19 crisis there was the case and sanction of Manchester City. Is Uefa still supporting the chamber’s findings? Are you still fully behind the guilty verdict and the two-year ban?

Ceferin: Look, the decision was made and now the case is at the court of arbitration for sport and CAS will decide. That’s absolutely all I can say, for two reasons. Firstly, the independent bodies made the decision, I didn’t, and secondly, I really don’t know the case [well enough] and I don’t like people who comment about matters that they don’t know well. There are too many people commenting on different topics that they do not have a clue about.

Guardian: So the possibility of a deal or a settlement outside court is not an issue for you?

Ceferin: I don’t want to comment on this case any more.

Possible impact on Man United

Man United will be paying close attention to Man City’s CAS appeal.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are poised to play Champions League football next term as Man City are currently banned from European competition for two seasons.

When the Premier League stopped, Man City were second in the table while United sat in fifth.

However, if City are successful in their appeal, Man United would only qualify for the Champions League if they finish in the top four or if they win this season’s Europa League.
