Liverpool & Man United old-boys Dirk Kuyt & Henrik Larsson to team up in the Feyenoord dugout

Dirk Kuyt & Henrik Larsson to team up in the Feyenoord dugout

According to a reporter for the reliable Dutch paper Telegraaf, Feyenoord are gearing up for a major change in their dugout.

Dirk Advocaat, 72, is in charge of Feyenoord. However, Advocaat’s contract in Rotterdam expires at the end of the 2020-21 campaign.

Now, Telegraaf reporter Valentijn Driessen has claimed on Dutch TV that Feyenoord are planning to appoint two former players as their new management team after Advocaat’s term ends.

Former Liverpool winger Dirk Kuyt is set to become the club’s new manager, while former Man United and Celtic striker Henrik Larsson will be appointed as the #2.

What Telegraaf reporter Valentijn Driessen actually said

Speaking on the ‘Veronica Inside’ show on Dutch TV on Monday night, Telegraaf reporter Valentijn Driessen said:

Dirk Kuyt will be Advocaat’s successor at the end of the coming season.

He will be joined by his good friend Alfons Groenendijk and Henke Larsson, the Swede.

Henrik Larsson has more managerial experience than Dirk Kuyt

On the assumption that Feyenoord will confirm that Dirk Kuyt is their new manager, this will be Kuyt’s first experience in charge of a football team.

By contrast, Henrik Larsson has spent a short period in charge of Swedish club Helsingborg.

However, Larsson only spent two months at Helsingborg in 2019 before the abuse from fans proved too much for the Swedish legendary striker.

Henrik Larsson has been linked to Southend & Wycombe Wanderers

It’s been clear for some time that Henrik Larsson has been looking for a way back into football.

Last year, the BBC confirmed that Larsson was in talks with Southend United about becoming their manager. However, as we now know, that union never materialised.

Also, in October 2019, the Independent reported that Dennis Bergkamp, Henrik Larsson and Dirk Kuyt were considering joining forces in an attempt to takeover Wycombe Wanderers. That deal also fell by the wayside.

Dirk Kuyt retired from football in 2017 after a 19-year long career. Kuyt spent six years at Liverpool between 2006 and 2012. During his time at Anfield, Kuyt won the League Cup in 2011-12 while he was a Champions League runner-up in 2006-7.

Henrik Larsson stopped playing football in 2013. During his career, Larsson won the 2006-7 Premier League title while on loan at Man United from Helsingborg. Larsson also played for Celtic from 1997 until 2004, before he left the Scottish giants to join Barcelona for two seasons.

Both Kuyt and Larsson also played for Feyenoord during their careers.

What happened to Feyenoord in the 2019-20 season?

The 2019-20 Dutch Eredivisie season is over.

Several weeks ago, the Dutch decided to draw a line under their campaign due to the impact of coronavirus pandemic.

Ajax finished the season in first place ahead of AZ Alkmaar, however Ajax were not crowned champions.

That said, Ajax will go into next season’s Champions League at the group stage.

Feyenoord finished the season in third spot, one point and place ahead of PSV.

As a result, Feyenoord have qualified for next season’s Europa League.
