How the Premier League plan to deal with Arsenal, Man City & Aston Villa’s games in hand

Premier League: Project Restart latest

On Monday, the 20 Premier League clubs held their latest meeting to discuss Project Restart.

It’s still unknown if the 2019-20 Premier League will resume. Also, no one knows if the league season can be completed.

However, on Monday, the Premier League sides agreed to resume training according to the newly adopted medical protocols.

The protocols have three phases:

1. Training drills in small groups

2. Begin contact training (yet to be agreed)

3. Resume full training (yet to be agreed)

Arsenal vs Man City & Aston Villa vs Sheffield United: Games in hand

When the Premier League was suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic, most teams in the division had played 29 games.

However, four clubs have a game in hand: Man City (2nd), Sheffield United (7th), Arsenal (9th) and Aston Villa 19th.

These were as a result of the Carabao Cup final which saw Manchester City beat Aston Villa at Wembley.

The Atheltic have revealed an interesting update from Premier League chief executive, Richard Masters, following Monday’s latest Premier League meeting:

Masters did say the “truncated schedule” would lead to some “interesting scheduling options”, so the suggestion that fans could be able to watch a game every day for seven weeks is a possibility.

In terms of which games will come first, Masters also admitted it would be a good idea to play any games in hand relatively early in the revised schedule, just in case the season has to stop again.

Here’s the bottom line: if the Premier League does resume, then the following matches are likely to be rescheduled:

– Aston Villa vs Sheffield United

– Arsenal vs Manchester City

The obvious advantage of playing these fixtures as soon as possible, is that it would allow the Premier League end the season on a points-per-game method if the campaign needs to be curtailed.

Liverpool: Champions trophy celebration

Liverpool are within touching distance of winning the 2019-20 Premier League.

Jurgen Klopp’s men only need two more wins to confirm their first championship in 30 years.

During Monday’s Premier League meeting, the subject of Liverpool’s possible trophy celebration came up. Richard Masters said:

If at all possible, we would like to have a presentation to give the players and staff the moment they have worked so hard for.

We don’t want to lose that, unless it is not possible.

When could the Premier League restart?

June 12 has been widely discussed as a possible restart date for the 2019-20 season.

However, the Athletic warn that the start date is probably going to be pushed back:

Many clubs now believe the weekend of June 19 or even June 26 may be a more likely return.

So what’s next?

With so many issues still to finalise, the Premier League clubs have two meetings scheduled for next week.

The first meetings is set for May 26, and the second on May 28.
