Flamengo conducted widespread testing, which not only included the players and all club employees, but also some family members and close contacts of those people.

In total, 293 tests were conducted by April 30 and May 3.

Of the 38 positive Covid-19 cases, Flamengo report that everyone is asymptomatic.

The club have kept the identities of those players under wraps.

Interestingly, 25 cases were either family members or employees of the Flamengo players.

Flamengo noted that all those who tested positive are now in quarantine, and the club will continue to monitor their progress on a daily basis.

The news of the 38 positive Covid-19 tests at Flamengo comes days after the club suffered a tragedy.

68-year-old Jorginho, who worked as a masseur for Flamengo for 40-years and was the club’s longest-serving employee, died on Monday from Covid-19.

He left behind his wife, two daughters and five grandchildren.

Brazilian football & Covid-19

Football in Brazil is currently suspended during the Covid-19 pandemic.

However, as confirmed by ESPN’s Tim Vickery, some teams are planning to restart training imminently:

This week, the Porto Alegre rivals will become the first big Brazilian clubs to resume training — Inter on Tuesday, and Gremio due to start the following day.

Yet, the Brazilian FA are yet to confirm even a provisional start date for football’s resumption.
