FIFA scraps its 2020 The Best awards
As reported by Marca on Wednesday, FIFA have decided to scrap this year’s The Best awards.
The ceremony was set to be held in Milan in September.
However, due to the Covid-19 crisis, FIFA have decided to suspend this year’s gala event.
That means that no player will be crowned The Best in 2020.
Who won The Best in 2019?
Last year, Barcelona’s Leo Messi won FIFA’s star prize.
Liverpool’s Virgil van Dijk was second, while Juventus striker Cristiano Ronaldo came third.
In the other categories in 2019, Liverpool’s Alisson was name goalie of the year, while Reds manager Jurgen Klopp was named coach of the year.
American star Megan Rapinoe was named The Best FIFA Women’s Player.
Only one FIFA competition remains in 2020
On a sidenote, FIFA also postponed three competitions on Tuesday.
The U20 Women’s World Cup was postponed until February 2021
The U17 Women’s World Cup has been moved to February-March next year.
While the Futsal World Cup is now scheduled for the start of 2021.
What will happen to the European Golden Shoe award?
Another highly sought-after award is the European Golden Shoe.
Last year, Leo Messi won the prize for a sixth time in his sparkling career.
Marca report that it’s still undecided whether this award will be handed out this year.
On a practical level, the sporting integrity of the European Golden Shoe award has been complicated after leagues including France, Holland and Belgium have already decided that their 2019-20 season is over.
As noted on Wikipedia, Lazio striker Ciro Immobile is currently leading the chase for the European Golden Shoe ahead of Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski.

Ballon d’Or remains up in the air
Every year, the esteemed France Football magazine hands out its coveted Ballon d’Or award.
This award has been handed out every year since 1956.
However, Marca report that France Football haven’t yet decided if they’ll present their Ballon d’Or award this season.
Since Euro 2020 has been pushed over to 2021, the Ballon d’Or would be decided off the back of the Champions League, should that resume in August.
