Laurence Bassini says that he has agreed a deal to buy Charlton
South London Press sports editor, Richard Cawley, has reported that Laurence Bassini believes he has a deal in place to buy Charlton Athletic.
Bassini said “I’ve made an offer, it’s been accepted – the lawyers are dealing with it.”
Bassini says it is out of his control if Tahnoon Nimer chooses to sell the football club to another interested party.

On the likelihood of the deal going through, Bassini claimed it’s now in the hands of Charlton’s majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer.
Syrian businessman Tahnoon Nimer, through his company, East Street Investments, bought Charlton from Roland Duchatelet in January.
However, Nimer has reportedly withdrawn his financial support for the relegation-threatened club after a fallout with executive chairman Matt Southall.
On Friday, Charlton released the following statement:
A legal process has to take place for the change of ownership of ESI (East Street Investments) to be completed.
This is a positive step for the club and will offer some much-needed stability.
For legal reasons, we cannot go into any more details on the change of ownership.
📝 A note from club’s Board of Directors…
The club has received notice of a change in ownership at East Street Investments.

Ex-Watford chairman Laurence Bassini has a poor reputation
Laurence Bassini is best known in the world of football for his time at Watford.
Bassini was chairman of Watford Football Club from May 2011 to June 2012, before he sold the club to the Pozzo family.
A quick search online shows that Bassini has plenty of skeletons in his closet. On his period spent at Watford, Wikipedia note:
Bassini’s tenure at Watford was marked by allegations of financial impropriety culminating in the ‘Safegate’ scandal when just prior to the sale of the club in June 2012 Bassini called the police after an employee refused to hand him the keys to the club safe.
He wore a red builder’s helmet giving interviews to the local paper.

Back in 2012, the Watford Observer spoke to Bassini about the ‘Safegate’ episode.
Without any shame, the former Watford owner said:
I asked for my keys to the safe. It is my safe.
The employee wouldn’t give them to me. I suspended that person and had the employee escorted from the building by the police.
Could Huw Jenkins buy Charlton?
It’s been reported that former Swansea chairman, Huw Jenkins, is also looking at buying Charlton. The Sun claimed:
The former Swansea City supremo will take over this week once the EFL approve the deal which should be a formality.
Jenkins has been looking for a new project since and has looked at Charlton for weeks.
What league will Charlton be in next season?
When the Championship season was suspended, Charlton were third bottom of the division.
In a major blow for the Addicks, who still don’t know if the league will manage to resume, let alone finish, they had managed to avoid the relegation places all season until losing 1-0 against Middlesborough on March 7.
Social media reaction
#cafc reports suggest Laurence Bassini will be the new owner of Charlton Athletic.
Look at facts-
•he become redundant in 2007.
•Purchased Watford for £400k in 2012. •Stole around £1.5M and a year later stated he couldn’t pay it back.
•Had police arrest him at Watford. 1/3— 🔴⚪️Gary CAFC🔴⚪️ (@Gary89CAFC) May 25, 2020
